A Legacy of Electronic Combat
Squadron History
The 42nd Electronic Combat Squadron began as the 42d Reconnaissance Squadron, Very Long Range, Photographic, and was activated on 7 November 1945. Over the following 38 years, the squadron experienced several designation changes, assignments, and aircraft transitions while serving in Europe and Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict.
The squadron’s affiliation with the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing began on 1 July 1983, when it was assigned to the Wing at RAF Upper Heyford. At that time, the squadron adopted the EF-111A to provide electronic countermeasure capabilities for NATO operations.
The squadron’s association with the 20th ended on 1 July 1992, when the squadron was inactivated. Although no longer assigned to the 20th, the squadron continues to serve as part of the 55th Electronic Combat Group at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

Assigned to the 20th TFW
The squadron joined the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing at RAF Upper Heyford and adopted the EF-111A electronic combat aircraft.

The squadron supported combat operations against Libya, providing vital electronic countermeasure capabilities.
Desert Shield & Desert Storm
The squadron supported coalition combat operations against Iraq during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
